For a classic film buff, I've got some serious gaps in my resume. I must admit that I have yet to see Joan Crawford in a movie. (Any suggestions? I don't like to waste my time on so-so films. :P) But it can't be denied that she's considered one of the great stars of the "Golden Age of Hollywood" and also a fashion icon. In fact, one white, ruffled organza gown (designed by Adrian) was reproduced by Macy's and sold over 500,000 copies.
The reason I selected Joan for this month's Classic Actress profile is that I stumbled upon the really cute photo pictured above and was blown away by her outfit. First of all, it's completely practical and very different from what's worn in most Hollywood "starlet" shots. I also think it's easily adaptable to modern wear; all of the items could be probably picked up in a trip to the mall. Wide-leg, high-waisted jean trousers have made a real comeback and *I* just love them to pieces. (Check out the sweet buttons up the side!) The white sleeveless blouse is made in a crisp fabric, with a fitted waistband and a wide, drooping collar. The ensemble is finished with "strappy" heeled sandals and a white, wide-brimmed sun hat. What a sweet look!
Also, if you are (like me) a huge fan of Tonner Dolls, you might want to take a peek at their 2009 Collection, which features a bunch of Joan Crawford dolls. I thought I'd share a few - these feminine suits are beyond delicious! Which is your favorite?
And, just a funny piece of trivia about a woman who had a far from funny life: Joan was obsessed with cleanliness. She would wipe down everything her house guests touched, scrub the bathroom of every hotel room she stayed in, and always slept in white pajamas...
