There's no denying the fact that the economic recession that we've been battling over the past few years has made a big impact on the fashion world. Not only in the area of finances, with people generally buying less and being more careful with their purchases (which is something that should happen at all times), but even in the actual fashion designs and styles. In September 2008 I wrote a small article titled, "Fall Fashion - Is it getting 'depressing?'" in which I touched on the fact that fashion had taken a turn towards the looks of the 1930s. Well, I am very pleased to say that this trend has continued for the past year and still remains strong.
Taking a cue from the "Dust Bowl" era, Ralph Lauren's Spring 2010 Collection features looks that bring back images of "the farmer, the cowboy, the pioneer woman." And I love almost all of them. Anything from the 1920-50s (some 60s) is my favorite and I am delighted that vintage-inspired looks continue to be in vogue.
And of course, Ralph Lauren executes this whole idea beautifully. He is one high fashion designers that consistently produces looks I love; classic, realistic clothing (sometimes even on the modest side of things) on models that actually looks beautiful. Yes, they are still really thin, but their makeup is kept minimalistic and pretty, their skin looks healthy, and their hair is relaxed and naturally lovely. Five stars for presentation, Mr. Lauren!
First to grace the runway is a collection of darling little sunny day dresses. Some of these might just bring back too many memories of the 90s for me, but most of them are subtle enough to evoke the aura of the bygone era of the 1930s. Cheerful floral prints in flattering, classic designs, with finishing touches like whimsical buttons up the front, seem to say, "things will get better. Just you wait and see."
And check out the newsboy caps! I love them soft and floppy like the ones shown here - they add such an interesting touch to the looks. It's like a combination of simple femininity with inner strength... something that the hard working, thrifty, and always elegant women of the 1930s symbolize.
The cute platform sandals are totally my thing. The oxfords with ankle socks... not so much. But they are definitely very "in." :)
Now here comes the pretty and yet amazing practical evening-wear. Who doesn't love a sweet little party dress, perfect for any occasion and super flattering? I was delighted at how many of these designs truly fit the bill. They are looks that any woman could wear and look fabulous in. :)
These ensembles look a bit more 1950s than 30s (which would have had longer, narrower hemlines), and that's just fine by me. The first design, in black, makes my heart skip a beat. So beautiful and classy. The second look is similar and very Grace Kelly.
The third outfit (which could use the neckline filled in a bit :P) is more of a roaring 20s look and the soft lines are "toughened up" by, once again, a newsboy cap. As far as a "pants" look for evening-wear, the fourth one is absolutely fabulous and remains super feminine. And I just love the use of the "vest" and long jacket in the fifth one. So chic.
The very first outfit in this set of photos is my absolutely favorite in the entire collection. So 20s and definitely something I want to recreate once I've got my sewing room put back up again (drat that flood!) and find the perfect fabric (drat that empty pocketbook! ;). The different layers, droopy ruffles, the collar - just dreamy. Every one of these is amazingly stunning, from the glamour of the second look to the everyday practicality and elegance of the third.
The fourth outfit is just incredible - look at that hemline - and the fifth gown (all pale pink and frills) is once again "toughened up" by a strong jacket and hat. Maybe not the accessories I'd choose for an evening out, but interesting none-the-less. ;)

Which looks are your favorites and (most importantly) what do you think of the return to "depression era" fashion? Do you have any favorite designers who manage to pull off nice, classy designs (on pretty, healthy looking models) consistently?
I hope you've been inspired! Have a great weekend! :)
