From Mini to Modest

Posted on 04:57 by mark khandry

If you've been looking around at the dresses carried in stores these days, you have probably given up on finding one that is both cute and modest. Not only do you have to deal with the usual issue of low-cut and skimpy bodices, but it seems that everything is made super short these days, often barely the length of a mini skirt. And yet, some of these designs are cute and do have pretty details that would make a super sweet ensemble... if only. If only it weren't so low. Or short. Or strapless. Or sheer. If only. If only. If only.

But there is good news for those of us who want to find wearable items at our local shopping mall. Layering has become a real phenomenon and provides lots of options for those of us who have chosen to dress modestly. Browsing some cute and quirky dresses online gave me some modesty ideas to share. Hopefully they'll inspire you and help to stretch your wardrobe in a modest and frugal way.

Too low? Wear a tank top or camisole underneath the dress for a higher neckline. Camisoles are carried at pretty much every store out there and often have fun style details like lace edging or beading. I pick up a few in neutrals and fun colors every year. If you are looking for something with a little bit more coverage or really want to fill in a neckline, try a tank top like this one.

This first design would look fabulous with a bright colored cami underneath it, making it more than just a little grey "rain-cloud" dress. The second one might also need to be filled in, and would probably benefit from a neutral piece, in a cream or peach shade.

Too skimpy? Sometimes we find a sweet and feminine design, like the two shown above, but it just needs some more fabric up top. A great way to use the same pieces and keep everything modest is wearing vintage-y little sundresses over a close fitting, long-sleeved tee. Check out this fabulous one. I find a slight scoop neckline is much more flattering than a high-cut crew neck.

These two dresses would look equally chic over a simple short-sleeved tee. Perfect for summer. The pink one makes me think of edwardian high teas and the cream design... it's just the thing for a fairy ball. :)

Too short? You've probably noticed that all of the pieces shown here are too short. Like I said earlier, most dresses these days are barely long enough to be a top. And that's the key here. Make the dress a top.

Depending on the style of the dress you choose (the pink one here would be great) it can look absolutely sweet with a simple, fitted skirt beneath it. (Don't choose one that's too full or long - it will look "heavy" and weighed down.) And a nice pair of dress pants or jeans always looks fabulous under a long tunic top (like this gorgeous black and white one). So why not buy that cute little dress you found and layer it over your favorite jeans? Or leggings, as shown in the first photo in this post, if that fits your style.

Remember, these layering principles can also work really well with cute strapless designs like the two above. The dress shown in the very first image of this post demonstrates it perfectly. A cute, lightweight summer blouse is the perfect base for working a dress that's sweet (except for its strapless-ness) into your wardrobe.

So... what is your opinion? Do you agree that we can make pieces that wouldn't-otherwise-be-modest totally acceptable with a bit of layering? Or do you think we should stay away from "mini" dresses entirely? I am interested in hearing your thoughts...

I hope you have a lovely weekend. May God bless you. *hugs*

A Saltwater Spring

Posted on 05:33 by mark khandry

If you've been following the blog for a while, you may remember a post last October about the delightful fall/winter clothing collection by Saltwater. I am pleased to announce that they have done it once again, providing beautiful and timeless designs that are whimsical and ultra feminine. I love how many of their pieces are very modest, or could be easily made so by layering. Their prices are definitely a bit high, but I think these photos will offer you lots of inspiration when shopping for your own summer wardrobe.

Just check out this description...

Our new summer collection is inspired by the rustic beauty of the French countryside.... Fields of cornflowers and sunflowers, sprigs of lavender and olive blossom.

Lovely, isn't it?

Simple, lightweight and feminine tops are perfect for the arriving warm weather. The simplicity of the first design is enhanced by a subtle fabric pattern. Rows of contrasting decorative embroidery at the hem add interest and a finishing touch.

The second look is made up of shockingly simple pieces, but kept lively by the quirky red leaf print of the blouse, and nicely paired with a relaxed jacket. Both of these looks work fabulously with jeans, whatever the style, creating a practical and ladylike ensemble.

A fabulous dress is an easy "feel good" piece for any occasion. The soft knit of the first look is perfect for when you want something comfortable and casual. The second dress is sweet, summery and appropriate for any daytime event. Ideal for lunch with a friend, a morning wedding, or just for feeling pretty on an afternoon around the house...

I just love tunic tops with jeans. Really, they don't work many other ways, since they tend to look too long and heavy over a skirt. But with that perfect pair of pants they are super-flattering and also very modest if you want more coverage. I also think that they are one of the few styles that "work" with skinny jeans, which are only kept flattering (IMHO) by high heels and a long-ish top.

The style of the first one is just fabulous, with a dropped drawstring waist, a delicate print and pretty appliques. Add this one to my wardrobe, please! The second top looks like it would be perfect for slightly breezier weather, and could be layered over a fitted, long-sleeved tee for more warmth.

Wearing a unique and adorable skirt is one of my favorite ways to dress up and feel girly, and it works wonderfully when paired with a simple top and a cute sweater. Check out how the same top and sweater (love the tiny polka dots - so understated and chic) is given two different looks just by switching the skirt. The second one is in that fun red leaf-print and the first is an amazing Indian-inspired design with sparkling embroidery at the hem. Lovely...

Which of these looks would you choose if your fairy godmother was offering to pay for and deliver an outfit to your doorstep? I think I'd go with the first one. Those shoes are just amazing. :)

Olivia and Joan Style

Posted on 06:18 by mark khandry

Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine. Most people nowadays wouldn't recognize either of those names, much less know that they were two very famous sisters. But Olivia and Joan were once top-billed actresses in the golden age of Hollywood... and each an Academy Award Winner. The two of them are still alive today and, sadly, they are at odds with one another. It seems that it has been that way their whole lives. Both being nominated for "Best Actress" in the same year probably didn't to help the situation...

The girls were born in Tokyo, Japan and both were successful actresses by 1940. Olivia made a splash early on; immortalized in one of the great films of the century - Gone With the Wind - and starring in eight films next to my favorite irishman of all time, Errol Flynn. I admit that this contributes largely to the fact that I have seen Olivia in at least half a dozen films, and Joan in none. But, to the younger sister's credit, she is the only actress to have won an Academy Award under the direction of Alfred Hitchcock, and her performances in his films are considered classics.

It really is sad that two young women who were so immensely talented should have had such an estranged relationship. These photos (from a LIFE shoot in 1942) seem to have been taken at a time when they were on friendly terms (or at least appeared to be, according to the rose-colored glasses of that era).

Regardless of the differences and controversy, they were two very beautiful girls... and wonderfully dressed. In these photos they can be seen sporting variations of the fashionable "pompadour" hair style (almost as huge as in the age of the Gibson Girl). In the above (left) image Olivia is wearing a classic 1940s style blouse, printed with bunches of bananas (was this the first graphic tee? ;) and a simple, straight skirt. Amazing shoes with cut-outs add a punch of glamour. Joan (above, right) is dressed more casually in a relaxed wrap top, pinned with a sprig of flowers, and stylish trousers, tied at the waist with a sash. Her wooden wedge shoes (featuring heel cut-outs) look like something straight out of one of today's fashion catalogues. Good styles apparently stick around...

The second shot of Olivia (above, left) shows a slightly less formal side. She is wearing a comfortable sweater top with contrast on the pocket and a rather eye-catching (and patriotic) belt. The wide cuff bracelet was probably super-trendy in 1942, and is still a hot piece today. Joan (on the right) is wearing an elegant, long-sleeved dress with a lace overlay and delicate buttons up the front. Perfect for an evening out. The huge flower on the bodice is a bit distracting, but the triple string of pearls is ultra chic.

Which of these lovely outfits would you have chosen to wear in 1942? Do you have a favorite film in which one of these actresses starred? I definitely plan on seeing the rest of the Errol/Olivia movies and her other notable pictures, and I have long been wanting to view Rebecca, for which Joan is famous. I'll probably have to check out Suspicion while I'm at it, which is the Academy Award winning role, and also stars Cary Grant (whom I have come to enjoy, despite myself ;).

If anything, I'm so glad that my own sisters and I don't have long-running family feuds (of course, there is the usual share of short-term ones). They are so much more fun to be friends with. :)

P.S. Thanks for all the prayers and encouragement after my last rather "down" post. I think God is doing wonderful things already. :)

When all you want to do is fly away...

Posted on 07:44 by mark khandry
Today I don't want to keep my feet on the ground. The sun is out, the cherry tree outside my bedroom window is blossoming, and the tulips are a wash of glorious color in the garden. It's the sort of day that fairies are bound to be about (unless they have left the vicinity due to the awful noise and chaos that has become the road in front of our house) and to stay indoors would just be wrong. I think I'll spend some time writing, and hopefully digging around in the backyard and trying to make it look pretty.

Regardless, a day like today calls for some green, "Neverland" inspired fashion...

Won't you fly with Me?

I think I'll save the elegant satin dress (check out the sweet buttons!), designer brooch and the amazing "mossy" heels for a summer evening. Instead, it would be great to spend the day in a yummy brown pleated skirt and a comfy green robe. Of course, some soft moccasin boots are just the thing for tramping around a yard that is still soft from the downpour of rain we received this year. If there's a chilly breeze, a lightweight scarf is a necessary part of the ensemble, and a bucket hat is perfect for sunshine protection.

A wonderful finishing addition would be one of my favorite soundtracks of all time coming through my iPod while I dig in the garden. Oh yes... ;)

___________________________________________________________

Sorry for the lack of a substantial post today. I have to confess that I have felt very burned out and uninspired over the past months. I don't know if this is due to the busier than normal schedule I've had this year or the fact that being job-less and broke has kept me from shopping for months, which rather puts a damper on researching and writing about fashion. Kind of like putting together a cookbook while you're on a diet. ;)

So, if you could all pray that God would continue to send me fashion inspiration and the discipline to write, and also provide me with a way to make some income (for much more important reasons than shopping, which I could care less about at this point ;P). If anyone is interested in contributing to the blog, please drop me a line (I am extremely particular what goes up, so I can't guarantee acceptance, but I definitely appreciate any offers) and if you have any ideas for topics you'd like me to write about, leave a message through my formspring box (in the top right corner). I appreciate all of your support and I hope you'll be patient with me while I am in this "slump." ;)

Thanks so much for reading! God bless.

Ralph Lauren Spring 2010 - The Recession Continues...

Posted on 08:04 by mark khandry

There's no denying the fact that the economic recession that we've been battling over the past few years has made a big impact on the fashion world. Not only in the area of finances, with people generally buying less and being more careful with their purchases (which is something that should happen at all times), but even in the actual fashion designs and styles. In September 2008 I wrote a small article titled, "Fall Fashion - Is it getting 'depressing?'" in which I touched on the fact that fashion had taken a turn towards the looks of the 1930s. Well, I am very pleased to say that this trend has continued for the past year and still remains strong.

Taking a cue from the "Dust Bowl" era, Ralph Lauren's Spring 2010 Collection features looks that bring back images of "the farmer, the cowboy, the pioneer woman." And I love almost all of them. Anything from the 1920-50s (some 60s) is my favorite and I am delighted that vintage-inspired looks continue to be in vogue.

And of course, Ralph Lauren executes this whole idea beautifully. He is one high fashion designers that consistently produces looks I love; classic, realistic clothing (sometimes even on the modest side of things) on models that actually looks beautiful. Yes, they are still really thin, but their makeup is kept minimalistic and pretty, their skin looks healthy, and their hair is relaxed and naturally lovely. Five stars for presentation, Mr. Lauren!

First to grace the runway is a collection of darling little sunny day dresses. Some of these might just bring back too many memories of the 90s for me, but most of them are subtle enough to evoke the aura of the  bygone era of the 1930s. Cheerful floral prints in flattering, classic designs, with finishing touches like whimsical buttons up the front, seem to say, "things will get better. Just you wait and see."

And check out the newsboy caps! I love them soft and floppy like the ones shown here - they add such an interesting touch to the looks. It's like a combination of simple femininity with inner strength... something that the hard working, thrifty, and always elegant women of the 1930s symbolize.

The cute platform sandals are totally my thing. The oxfords with ankle socks... not so much. But they are definitely very "in." :)

Now here comes the pretty and yet amazing practical evening-wear. Who doesn't love a sweet little party dress, perfect for any occasion and super flattering? I was delighted at how many of these designs truly  fit the bill. They are looks that any woman could wear and look fabulous in. :)

These ensembles look a bit more 1950s than 30s (which would have had longer, narrower hemlines), and that's just fine by me. The first design, in black, makes my heart skip a beat. So beautiful and classy. The second look is similar and very Grace Kelly.

The third outfit (which could use the neckline filled in a bit :P) is more of a roaring 20s look and the soft lines are "toughened up" by, once again, a newsboy cap. As far as a "pants" look for evening-wear, the fourth one is absolutely fabulous and remains super feminine. And I just love the use of the "vest" and long jacket in the fifth one. So chic.

The very first outfit in this set of photos is my absolutely favorite in the entire collection. So 20s and definitely something I want to recreate once I've got my sewing room put back up again (drat that flood!)  and find the perfect fabric (drat that empty pocketbook! ;). The different layers, droopy ruffles, the collar - just dreamy. Every one of these is amazingly stunning, from the glamour of the second look to the everyday practicality and elegance of the third.

The fourth outfit is just incredible - look at that hemline - and the fifth gown (all pale pink and frills) is once again "toughened up" by a strong jacket and hat. Maybe not the accessories I'd choose for an evening out, but interesting none-the-less. ;)
_____________________________________________________

Which looks are your favorites and (most importantly) what do you think of the return to "depression era" fashion? Do you have any favorite designers who manage to pull off nice, classy designs (on pretty, healthy looking models) consistently?

I hope you've been inspired! Have a great weekend! :)

Ruche - It's all in the details...

Posted on 07:58 by mark khandry
I think we have all seen and realized over and over again that it's the details that make up life. The little things. The miniscule touches. Small simplicity translated in something bigger and beautiful.

This is living. The everyday. And, of course, it applies to fashion just as much as anything.

We know that femininity can not be put on or off. Just like modesty, it needs to be an intricate part of who we are and flow from the inside out. But once you've got a feminine spirit, the little details can be fun and rewarding... and make us feel beautiful. :)

A company that I have recently fallen head over heels for is Ruche. They capture the little details perfectly, in a whimsical, feminine way. And the best part; their pieces are out-of-this-world gorgeous without being out-of-this-world expensive. Sure, they may be a bit over my usual price range, but if I really wanted a particular piece, I could save for and achieve it without feeling like I purchased something so expensive that it's evil. ;)

Here's my favorites from their Spring 2010 Lookbook.

This first ensemble is pure genius. The combination of colors (yellow, cream, brown and a pale teal) work together beautifully without being predictable or too matchy. The unique designs on the top makes it flattering and fun and the vest, with it's brown accents and printed floral back piece, is a surprising touch.

You can get a similar look by taking a small top or vest in a striking color and layering it over a long, fitted top. Vests have been back "in" for at least three years (and look like they're staying a while) - but keep it minimal and simplistic - nothing too crazy. :)

This first outfit could be layered over a fitted tee for a cute and modest look. Regardless, I absolutely adore the details on this gown. The piece on the bodice is an quirky masterpiece, really made up of the simplest stitches. (Plus, the "belt" piece is a fabulous touch!) And the necklace... wow. :)

The second look shows some great layering principles. A flowing feminine top (with a drapey ruffled neckline) and a relaxed knit cardigan is kept from being too loose and sloppy by a narrow, snug belt at the waistline.

The first outfit showcases a great no-nonsense, business look that would be suitable for a number of classy occasions. But femininity is not left behind - a yummy yellow top with a bow adds a subtle touch of loveliness.

In the second shot, what could be just a boring outfit is made interesting through colors and prints. The simple tank has lovely lace pattern in unexpected pale blue and brown and the draped vest compliments, yet stands out, in pale lilac, edged with black trim. And check out the necklace! (I have got to make myself one. :)

This first top is an absolute masterpiece. First of all, it's in a yummy, warm shade that I love (sorry, you girls with a cool skin tone - this won't work for you! ;). The embroidery is obviously amazing, but the other details add quite a bit to the look. There's pleats at the empire waistline, tucks at the hem, and straps made from a wide, pretty trim. The amazing headband is just a plus. :)

Fabric choices can also go a long way in putting together a feminine look. The draped silk top in the second shot is super romantic, and perfectly paired with a simple but elegant black lace skirt. A stunning pearls and flower-charms necklace wrapped twice around the neck adds a lovely finish.

Of course, a great bag does a lot for a simple outfit. In this case, it adds a bunch of bold color to something that might otherwise be too "neutral." Simple brown slacks are made pretty by a pale blue, empire waist top. BTW, the key to high waisted tops really seems to be soft, drapey fabric. It keeps the silhouette smooth and flattering.

I love the addition of the lace applique on the shoulder of the blouse. It adds unexpected interest, which is necessary in any great look. The chunky, yet elegant bracelet is the perfect touch.

Of course, accessories are always something that can make or break an outfit, and charming pieces like these can truly add a lovely and feminine touch to your look. Which is your favorite? I think I'm torn between the golden branch with the heart dangling from it, and the dancing slipper. :)

I hope everyone is having a great week! Thanks for all the well wishes... I am on the mend! God is good.
