It's just under a year since the lovely Olivia de Havilland was the featured classic fashionista, but I felt that she deserved another nod. Not only is she otherworldly adorable and a personal favorite of mine, but she will be featured as Maid Marian to Errol Flynn's Robin Hood next weekend. That's right! Maid Marian's Wardrobe - A Medieval Fashion Event begins a week from today! (Keep reading for some more up-to-date details on how to participate.)
Olivia de Havilland, known for her sweet smile and infectious laugh, was more than just a pretty face. She also established herself as a serious actress, winning two Academy Awards and nominated an additional three times. She also won a long court battle against Warner Brothers, which was start of breaking down the system in which actors were essentially "slaves" to their studio's wishes. And, of course, she played the beautiful leading lady to Errol Flynn's swashbuckling adventurer in a number of films. It's my favorite "typecast" role to watch her in. :)
I chose to share two different photos of Olivia in the post; both being outfits that could be easily adapted to modern wear. The first picture showcases a casual, almost sporty ensemble, consisting of a knit top and wool skirt. This is a perfect look for fall weather and can be easily copied with a cozy turtleneck and a nicely fitted pencil skirt.
The second photo shows an evening ensemble - perfect for a party, the theater, or a formal dinner. Both the blouse and skirt are made from a shiny, chiffon-like fabric, and are finished off with a stiff, metallic belt. Peasant tops similar to this one are easy to find in most stores, keeping with the popular "Bohemian" trend. One in a white, lightweight material can easily be paired with a super-long, flowing skirt for a sweet and romantic look. A cinched waistline is an important detail in getting the feel of the era right, and adorable little heeled shoes (like the ones you can see peeping out from her skirt) add a finishing touch.
Isn't she just beautiful? :)

As far as details got for Maid Marian's Wardrobe - A Medieval Fashion Event - be sure to click the link and refresh yourself on the details! I have also added a "Craft" category, for Marian-inspired homemade items. This includes costumes, jewelry, or accessories and must have been made with either "Maid Marian" directly in mind, or created recently in anticipation of this event. So, a medieval dress you made for the opening of The Lord of the Rings does not count - although you are welcome to wear it in you photographs for the Medieval Maid Marian category.
So, now is the time to start writing up your Marian-inspired posts, taking and editing your photographs and getting ready for fashion-y fun and inspiration (if you haven't done so already :). More details will be coming next week. I hope you're looking forward to it!
