Hello Hollywood!

Posted on 06:59 by mark khandry
Whew! So I keep forgetting that I never got a "Part II" post from my California trip (back in March/April) up. Time sure does fly! I hope you enjoy this sampling of photos, even though they're belated. I'm hoping to get an album or two online sometime. Maybe by Christmas... ;)

Welcome to Los Angeles! The trees are gorgeous and there's history everywhere, but otherwise it's kind of a trashy place (at least in the Hollywood section). Cari says it's actually come a long way, but it just doesn't have the same class as our major East Coast cities. (Yes, I am a snob. ;) Hold onto your purse and try to ignore the person trying to sell you something every five steps down the street. (Oh yeah, and watch out for stalkers! :P)

Just walking around downtown L.A. and seeing the stars in the sidewalk was one of the best things about the area. I recognized so many names... I just kept my camera on and snapped pictures of them all as we walked. And paused to pose with a few special people (like Ginger Rogers, above).

The super cool thing about the Kodak Theater, where they hold the Academy Awards every year, is that it's in a shopping mall, and the famous stairs are accessible to the public. All the films that won the best picture award are displayed on the columns on either side of the staircase, along with the date. It's a neat place.

Madame Tussaud's was definitely the most fun thing we did in the two days we spent in Hollywood. We had tossed around the idea of going to the one in London while we were there, but ultimately it didn't make the roster, so we decided to stop by in L.A. It was totally worth it. There were loads of wax statues of celebrities, new and old, and some of them were strikingly lifelike (others, not so much). Hugging Jimmy Stewart? The experience of a lifetime. I highly recommend this place. ;)

The Hollywood Museum was another highlight of the area, and it had loads of classic photos and memorabilia. I do recommend it, but there's some sleazy stuff (beware the infamous Marilyn Monroe section) and a creepy basement. :P

These two tiny dresses were worn by Judy Garland back when she was still little Frances Ethel Gumm. The Ruby Slippers I had seen before, in a traveling exhibition when I was only seven or eight years old, but they still hold the same magic.

Of course, any memorabilia regarding our favorite notorious relative is always a plus. :P (For the record, we have no record of any relationship, other than the same last name. But we love him, anyway. ;)

The morning that we were getting ready to visit Hollywood, we turned on the tv to hear the news. And there it was... the announcement that Elizabeth Taylor had just died. It was kind of crazy, since everyone was talking about her the whole time, and her picture was everywhere. It seems like every time I travel, someone famous dies (including Michael Jackson). Maybe I should stay put?

Grauman's Chinese Theater is also a pretty neat place. The first day when we tried to visit, almost the entire area was blocked off for a movie premiere taking place that evening (which in itself was pretty cool). So we went back the following week to get more photos, and found some fresh Helen Mirren prints. (Supposedly Penelope Cruz also got her star on the walk of fame that week. L.A. is always busy!)

And, after all the craziness of that flashy town had given us a headache, we discovered the perfect little place to relax. I had found Cafe Audrey in an internet search, and marked it as a spot to get lunch when we were in L.A. It's around the corner from all the excitement of Hollywood, but quiet, peaceful, and slathered in the inspiration of Audrey Hepburn. Such a nice little place, and one that I will definitely come back to if I get to California again. You just can't beat tomato soup and a hot panini after a long day of adventuring. :)

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

So, that's the rest of my California adventure update, for now. Have you ever been there? What are your favorite haunts? I'll keep them in mind... I'm definitely planning a return. :)

Flowers in Hair

Posted on 06:56 by mark khandry

There's no denying that flowers, whether fresh or fabric, can add the perfect touch of feminine loveliness to your hairstyle, and soften and romanticize your ensemble. Here are some of my favorite looks... courtesy of Pinterest. :)

Whew! I don't know if I've ever done a post that was purely inspirational. What do you prefer, words or pictures?

Here's hoping you have a lovely weekend and stay safe! I'm looking forward to a hurricane on Sunday. :P We'll see what happens...

What's in your bag?

Posted on 11:46 by mark khandry
For a while I've been following the various blog challenges over at IFB (Independent Fashion Bloggers) and wanting to participate. Unfortunately, my sporadic schedule usually thwarts my good intentions. But this week's challenge just fits perfectly into the time I've got on hand.

For those who have long wondered what secrets superwoman Amanda Flynn carries around in her handbag/purse/whatever... all is about to be revealed. ;)

I'm kind of paranoid about finding myself in a situation for which I am unprepared, so I usually try to have everything I can think I'd possibly need in my bag. If I were going anywhere important there would also be bobby pins, elastics, safety pins and makeup in this jumble... but here's the essentials.
  1. Point and shoot camera. I bought this for my London trip and it has served me well. My family has a really nice camera that I shoot my fashion photos with, but this is perfect for when I'm on-the-go. I find that I always want my camera when I bring to pack it, so I try to keep it in my bag at all times.

  2. iPod nano in a cheap and ugly $1 case that is super protective. ;) I like to plug this in to the car stereo and turn up the volume. The current soundtrack of my life is a whole lot of big band swing.

  3. Cell phone. I'm not a big phone call or texting person, but I like the security of having this with me at all times.

  4. CPR certification, and a booklet that walks you through the steps. Because you never know...

  5. Keys. With my Stop and Shop card, gym pass and a mini flashlight.

  6. Sunglasses. The paparazzi is out there!

  7. Hand mirror. For makeup and discreetly checking teeth after eating anything with spices or spinach. ;)

  8. Floss. For said teeth. There's nothing worse than being caught without it. (Although hair can be a decent substitute. Really.)

  9. Lip balm. Obviously.

  10. Credit cards, license, et cetera. I picked up this little case at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and ever since it's been perfect for carrying and organizing any cards I need.

  11. Notebook and a pen. I'm a writer, and I've always got to be prepared. This is for good ideas, notes, to do lists, or whatever comes to mind. Essential.

  12. A super cool gadget that hooks onto the edge of a table and holds your purse up off the ground. Although I must confess that my purse usually ends up on the ground, anyway.

  13. Organic lip tint. I've become super paranoid about what I put on and into my mouth (especially after all the statistics about lead and lipstick), and this handy little thing has both a pale sparkle and a deeper red. I've never really been a lipstick person, but this is nice when I want a little something extra.

  14. Tissues! Always.

  15. Business cards I won through Uprinting and designed myself.

  16. A ticket stub from The Help, which I saw yesterday and loved. The book was good, too, but harder to recommend. I think the movie is perfect for mother/(older)daughter dates. It was hysterically funny and so emotional and inspiring. Fabulous.

  17. Altoids. Because they are my favorite thing for when I'm nervous (like right before a show), or an upset stomach (also often before a show), or just a breath freshener (anytime).

  18. Glee gum! Because it's organic, I like to chew it, and also the reasons listed above.

  19. Extra change and a few dollars. Because. :)

My bag, which I picked up at Dress Barn before I went to London, is my favorite. It slings across my body and leaves my hands free, and also has plenty of room and pockets to organize all the stuff I have inside. It's perfect for the craziness of everyday life.

So girls, will you tell me what's in your bag?? If you do a post on your blog, be sure to share the link in the comments! I want to see! :)

The Tank Dress

Posted on 13:12 by mark khandry

So, ever since Royal Wedding Fever struck the world, I've been a little bit obsessed with Kate Middleton's fashion choices. I love her ladylike style, how she actually wears her outfits more than once, and the fact that not every item she chooses is a designer piece worth thousands of dollars. I especially love all her dresses (the classic sheath is just delicious). Oh yeah, and the nude pumps she wore all through Canada. Want those. :)

This dress was inspired partly by my newfound passion for those one-piece ensembles (I've been wearing separates way too much for the past four years or so) and also by one of my favorite summer items - the tank top. When there's no air-conditioning and the temperature is in the upper nineties, with 100% humidity that makes it feel like one hundred and fifteen (only a slight exaggeration), pretty much the only thing I can stand to wear is shorts and a tank top. Sooo... I decided to take that favorite piece and expand it into something just as comfy and versatile - a tank dress.

This fabric was given to me in a bag of vintage textiles (which included the fabric for my 70s-inspired skirt) and I decided it would be perfect for a test run of my idea. The color isn't my best (it actually looks kind of green in these photos, but it's much more grey/blue) which meant I wouldn't be devastated if it didn't turn out the way I hoped.

I took one of my tanks, folded it in half and placed it on the crease of the fabric. Using that as a very rough guide, I cut out the dress. I was kind of freaked out because I don't think I've ever tried something so completely pattern-free, but I figured the knit would be forgiving.

It was. I sewed the dress together at the sides, hemmed it up and bound the neck and arm holes with bias cut from the leftover fabric. The "belt" is simply the excess fabric I cut from the hemline. :)

Overall, I am pleased with how it came out. The dress is a tad tighter than I'd like and it's further emphasized by the thin, clinginess of the fabric, but I know that when I try this again I'll just cut more generously and use a heavier knit. In an amazing color, of course.

This was definitely a fun experiment and the end result feels very ready for tea with The Queen. ;) I can't wait to try this out with some layers when fall rolls around. Cardigans, jackets and et cetera. Mmm...

What I'm Wearing:
  • Tank Dress - made-by-me from vintage fabric

  • Heels by Mootsies Tootsies Collection - thrifted

  • Vintage Clutch by La Regale LTD

  • Headband - 90 cents at the dollar store

  • Bird Cage Necklace - made by me

  • Earrings - Kohl's

  • Claddagh Ring and Silver Bracelet - hand-me-down

Oh yes, and I just had to show off my glitter toenails. I got the idea for these on Pinterest and was very pleased with the end result. I can't wait to experiment with different colors and layering over other polishes. Definitely an easy and fun thing to try out! (Easier than getting achieving perfectly painted "normal" nails, in my opinion.)

So... has Kate Middleton's wardrobe inspired any or your fashion choices? Or any projects? Please do share! I love to hear what other people think of this new fashion icon. :)

    This week in pretty things...

Posted on 12:03 by mark khandry

It's a grey Sunday afternoon and the rain is pouring down outside my window. I'm in the perfect mood to escape to an imaginary world, relax with family, and curl up in my comfy chair with my laptop and reflect on some pretty things. This week has had its blessings, as well as challenges, and I've had the opportunity to 1) work on some projects that have been in my head (more on those coming soon!) 2) clean and organize 3) just enjoy life. I thought I'd share a few of the week's thoughts and inspirations with you, leaning heavily on my new favorite, Pinterest. :)

First of all, I participated in The Search for the New Lucky Lifestyle Contributor! Lucky magazine is holding a contest with various writing challenges and the winner will get the chance to write for the magazine, among other things. This would obviously be a dream of an opportunity and, if you feel like it, you can read my submission and vote for me HERE. Your support is very much appreciated. :)

Keeping on the topic of the first Lucky! challenge, which is dressing for work, I really dig ladylike office ensembles like these ones. A pencil skirt, pumps, belt and a cardigan (worn with your favorite blouse, or course) is just the perfect look. Almost makes me want to get a desk job. ;)

    True words.

Lately I've been taken with the idea of getting an airstream camper/trailer/caravan thing. If life could work out the way I'd want it to, I think I'd travel the country making music (which doesn't pay) and writing bestsellers (which pays only if you do have the stroke of luck to write a bestseller :P), marry someone who does freelance work, and raise a handful of hippie children in the back of one of these. Maybe not the most glamorous life, but I'd like to give it a try. ;)

Pretty hair can totally brighten up your day, and lately I've been so loving braids. Versatile, simple and timeless.

I don't think I fully realized what amazing places there are to be seen around the world until I started browsing pictures on Pinterest. Seriously, some of these places look like a fantasy land.

Creative organization and decorating ideas get me so excited! Nothing seems to give me more pleasure than spaces that are utilized to the maximum, and simple touches that make a room into a place you love...

The amazing discovery of the week was Paperback Weddings. Their wedding videos are the most unbelievable, creative and interesting I've ever seen. Forget that boring ceremony vid - these are truly  works of art. (P.S. My favorite, of the four I've watched so far, is Tyler and Julie. That's the kind of wedding I want. :)

Speaking of weddings, I am totally loving mismatched bridesmaid dresses, like these ones. :)

Words like these are food for the soul, and I've tacked this one above my bed as a reminder. When things don't go the way they should, a new tomorrow is a comforting and beautiful thought.
