When the heat of summer becomes too much to bear... When humidity clings to your skin like a heavy and unwanted blanket... When the days feel drab and endlessly, pointlessly sunny... When you've got a nice dress and nowhere to go... When your appetite just isn't going to be satisfied by salad... When you have no idea how to spend your afternoon...
Get on the telephone! Your bestest girlfriends are the ones to call! The ones who are willing to drop everything and run to your aid. The ones who also have nice dresses and nowhere to go. Invite them all, or just a few, but don't spend too much time gabbing on the phone... there's work to be done!
P.S. Ask them all to bring a little dish of something sweet.
Put on that amazing dress you've been dying to debut. It's always best to wear it while preparing for your company - keeps you feeling glamourous - but be sure to wear an apron! You may also want to leave the killer heels for later. And don't worry if your careful coiffure becomes "willow o' wispy." It's best to look relaxed and natural.
Set the table! Bring out your best china, your antique furniture... and be sure to fill a vase with flowers! These can be obtained at the supermarket or in your own backyard. Then whip up a few desserts. There's no need for huge quantities or grand opulence... as long as they look pretty and taste good. You can pick up some simple treats at aforementioned supermarket if required. Remember to walk proudly in that amazing dress!
Think of something unexpected. It needn't be complicated, just quirky and fun (stealing ideas from the internet is entirely acceptable). Add a personal touch or dress up your table-setting with a theme. If all other ideas fail, you can always greet your guests while wearing a rabbit mask... works every time.
Seat your guests and start the party. It's best to turn on the air conditioning... or at least open the windows for a fresh breeze. Eat lots of lovely things, smile, laugh, and tell stories. Reading from riveting or inspirational books is entertaining and provides ideas for discussion. You can also ask deep and thoughtful questions, including my favorite: If you had to be blind or deaf, which would you choose?
Enjoy yourself. Sit back and soak in the rewards of your impromptu tea party. Whatever you do, keep things relaxed and informal. (No extended pinky fingers required!) Tea parties are meant to be a good time, so make sure that everyone (yourself included) is feeling refreshed and cheerful. Pour more tea and eat more cupcakes if necessary.
Repeat your tea parties as often as you wish... or until the midsummer doldrums have fled.
"I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil— this is the gift of God."
Ecclesiastes 3:12-13
