When cruising London by bus on my first day across the pond, I was assailed by a huge Burberry advertisement in a storefront window. Ah yes, high fashion was finally all around me, and what better way to celebrate than by looking at a classic trench coat and Emma Watson's lovely face? ;)
Not only does Burberry know how to pick a sophisticated and adorable young woman to be the face of their fall/winter line, but they truly have smashing-looking products (the prices are smashing, too - as in, "I will smash you over the head if you even think about spending at that amount of money on an item!"). But it can't be denied that we can glean some fabulous ideas by looking through their collection, especially in the category of "coats and jackets", which seems to be their speciality.
With winter on it's way, it is time to pull out your warm coat. Or, if you need a new one, begin the long and laborious search for that perfect piece. Here's some looks and trends to inspire and hopefully get you a bit excited about that winter-wear. The cold weather definitely has it's perks. ;)
Winter White is always super classy and stylish. Yes, I know that it used to be taboo to wear it after labor day, but really... today "anything goes". I think you will agree, looking at these designs, that it can be stylish and appropriate for pretty much any occasion. Of course, along with white comes a practicality issue, as it is harder to keep clean, but that just adds to the glamour of wearing the color. If you manage to keep your white coat flawless, it will definitely look like a million bucks.
I just love the two styles shown here (click each image for complete info and photos of the item) - they are very contemporary and chic, from the collar shapes to the black buttons and a snazzy belt buckle. I can just see Agent 99 in one of these... ;)
Color is another big thing to keep in mind when you are purchasing something as important as a coat. It had better suit you, because you are going to live with it for a least a few years. Although it can be a big decision to go with a color rather than just basic black or grey, it can add so much charm and personality to an item that would otherwise be plain normal or blah. It truly stands out in a crowd.
Look for fun or interesting details to further personalize your choice. The ruching at the hem of this elegant purple coat (very lightweight and suitable to be worn as a dress) is just adorable and adds such a unique touch. Lovely.
Plaid is huge for fall and winter - it seems to come back with twice as much "pow" every year as it did the one before. This is a trend that I can be wary off, after seeing it abused in the 80s and 90s in hideously bright prints and yards of fabric. But it really can be done right and will add a very "British" flare to your look. The key is to keep it subtle and clean cut. Don't go with anything that is too bold (think "muted") and don't use it all over. A small jacket, a sleek fitting skirt or a vest are the perfect ways to add it to your wardrobe. A full skirted dress... not so much.
I think the examples shown here get it just right, and I especially like the two tones used on the grey jacket. It breaks up the plaid and keeps things interesting. (Oh yes, and look twice at the tan coat! It's Burberry's trademark check fabric - first used in 1924.)
Double Breasted styles come back every season and are seeing an even larger rise in popularity this year, due to the huge amount of "military" inspired looks that are sweeping the runways. This style works best on smaller busted women and should be avoided by curvier ladies, as all the buttons add width to the figure, especially the bust.
The first design shown here features a very unique neckline, with a high buttoned collar, while the second shows a more traditional shape. Both are super flattering and evoke a strong, confident sense of style.
Quilted Coats are a real must for the freezing weather. Sorry if you still don't agree with me on the coat fullness factor, ladies, but believe me, it makes a huge difference in warmth. And a well fitting coat does not have to "poof" you two sizes larger than you are. If what you wear beneath it (top, skirt or slacks) is fitted and properly in proportion to the coat, it looks stunning.
If you want some waistline definition, you can always go with a belted design like those shown here. Your collar options are endless and I just love the chic, folded-back looks on these. Add some fur or a unique detail and you are set to go!
Of course, no review of Burberry coat styles would be complete without touching on their iconic trench coat. Featuring the classic double-breasted, belted design, it has become a staple of wardrobes across the century - worn by almost every style icon... from Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca to Jackie O.
According to Wikipedia - "In 1914 Burberry was commissioned by the War Office to adapt its officer's coat to suit the conditions of contemporary warfare, resulting in the 'trench coat'. After the war, the trench coat became popular with civilians."
An interesting tidbit. It's not the first time that the military has influenced the fashions of a nation.
