Gather ye rosebuds while ye may

Posted on 18:29 by mark khandry
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles to-day
To-morrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he's to setting.

That age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
Times still succeed the former.

Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may, go marry:
For having lost but once your prime,
You may for ever tarry.

There's something about these words by Robert Herrick that strikes a chord with me. Of course, I've always seen them coupled with a stunning painting by my favorite Pre-Raphaelite artist, John William Waterhouse, but even alone they are eerily poignant.

Lately I've been doing a lot of thinking about life, where I am now, and what adventures and opportunities I should seek out while I am young, single, and have the freedom and the chance. While I disagree with this poem about "that age is best which is the first" and intend to have adventures until the day I die... I never want to hold regrets from when I was young.

Probably the second greatest fear I've ever experienced - the first was that I would be forgotten after my  death - was that I would wake up as an old woman and feel intense sorrow because I had not lived my life to its fullest potential. (And that doesn't mean chasing every opportunity that presents itself, doing crazy and dangerous things, and "following my heart," which I've learned is a decidedly poor leader.) But I do want to have treasured every moment, reveled in the beauty of life, walked with the faith of a child, taken the opportunities God has given me, and maybe done one or two wacky, adventurous things in my time. (I'll let you know what those turn out to be. ;)

The last verse of this poem would be more powerful if it said, instead of "go marry," something to the extent of "go and pursue whatever adventure God has called you to." Because, although we've got the same Author, everyone has a different story. And each one is beautiful and unique.

But seriously, let's not waste the potential of our youth in despair, laziness, or dreaming of the future. Let it be said of us that we gathered every rosebud of life with tenderness, awe, and much excitement.

Carpe diem. Seize the day. :)

You Are Loved {republished}

Posted on 06:03 by mark khandry
This post was published last Valentine's Day on a blog that I started for more "serious" writing but eventually abandoned. Since AmandaBeth is now a place for much more than just fashion, I decided to republish it here (with a few little tweaks) for anyone who missed it.

Today is a special day known as Valentine's. It's a holiday meant to celebrate love, romance and, of course... sell lots and lots of themed merchandise. Couples everywhere look forward to this day; a set time to spend with their special someone. Everywhere you go, romance is in the air. In your face. Impossible to escape. If you aren't watching guys buying roses for their girl, or listening to your best friend's dinner plans, you're thinking about your own prospects for the holiday.

For some of us, there isn't a whole lot on the schedule.

And, for me, that's ok.

I have never had a boyfriend. This was not because I couldn't get one (just to clarify that important point ;) but because I do not intend to enter into a serious relationship until I have found the man I intend to marry. At present, I don't feel ready for that chapter of my life... and he is yet to make his appearance. ;)

That means that I will not have a date on Valentine's Day.

I'm 100% fine with that.

This may sound terribly corny, but I do like to say that Jesus is my Valentine... my beginning and my end. He is the one who holds my heart and satisfies my soul in a way that no human being ever could. He walks with me, listens to my endless talking, and holds my hand. He's the best dance partner in the universe.

As if that wasn't awesome enough, there is my family, both biological and in spirit. It is impossible to be alone on Valentine's Day when you are swarmed with great friends and a gazillion super siblings. In fact, I am a firm believer that this holiday is not just for couples. It is about so much more than romantic love. It is meant to be shared by best friends, siblings, cousins, parents and their children... and the list goes on and on. Who says we can't take this time to show our love to everyone around us, instead of just focusing on one person? If we did, I think it could be even more beautiful.

For those of you who have anticipated Valentine's as little more than "Single Awareness Day," for those of you who are lonely, for those of you who are hurting, for those of you who are broken hearted... know that you are loved.

If I could, I would give each one of you a hug myself... but Jesus is always waiting for you with open arms. He will never abandon you, let you down or break your heart. In fact, he's the only one with a glue gun big enough to repair the damage that has already been done. His hands are healing and His words are love.

So maybe, just maybe we should take time today to share His love with others, regardless of who they are or where we might be. Instead of just focusing on ourselves, let's think about reaching out to others who may be lonely on Valentine's Day... whether it's a neighbor down the street or an older family member who has lost their spouse. Taking the time to brighten someone's day can only end up warming our own hearts in return.

Remember, if romantic love is what we are looking forward to as our ultimate fulfillment and end, we will never be satisfied. Jesus is the only one who can truly complete and content us, and when He is the first love of our life... everything else will fall into place. :)

Friends

Posted on 06:51 by mark khandry

To know someone here or there
                       with whom you can feel
                       there is understanding
                       in spite of distances or
                       thoughts expressed
That can make life a garden.
                       ~ Goethe

This post, in honor of the birthday of a very special, extraordinarily dear-to-my-heart kindred spirit, is dedicated to friends. I am so thankful for them.

Ice Queens and Teams - 2011 US Figure Skating Championship Favorites

Posted on 15:51 by mark khandry

My sister Lydia and I follow figure skating all year long. We love to keep up to date on the athletes (new programs, injuries, struggles, comebacks, victories), the ever changing rules (will they ever stop?), and the drama of every single competition. It's such a lovely sport; combining music, beauty, artistry, and athleticism. Yep, I admit a major fixation. :)

Probably the most exciting event of the year is the US Championships, when our athletes are in top form, the national champions are crowned, we get to see who makes the world team... and who's (literally) left out in the cold.

This year fully lived up to expectations and was terribly exciting.

The ladies competition has always been my favorite (except for when Ice Dance got crazily intense last year) and is a real nail biter when the title is up for grabs. This year, three past champions were the leaders, and kept things together to make it a really interesting competition. Ultimately, Alissa Czisny took the gold in a beautiful, nearly flawless free skaye that was mesmerizing. She was my favorite going into the event and I am so glad that she's been able to continue her great season and really, truly, be the great skater we all know she is. I'll be cheering for her during the World Championships next month.

Alissa also had my favorite costumes in the competition, both of them simple and appropriate for her graceful programs. The minimalistic white short program gown featured just the beading at the beginning of the season, but then the flash of purple was added later for more effect. I think it's lovely. Alissa's blue dress suited the free skate program perfectly and looked like a gorgeous waterfall. I think it's one of the nicest skating dresses I've seen in a long time.

Ice Dance was the most predictable event this year and the top three couples were just what we hoped for. Meryl Davis and Charlie White were in great form, as usual, and there wasn't much of a challenge for gold. Although this team is one of my favorites, their programs fell a bit flat for me this year, and I wasn't hugely impressed by the costumes. Meryl's short dance dress (shown above) is lovely, but a bit costume-y. And she showcased yet another new dress in the free dance. I'm curious to see what she goes with for the World Championships.

Adorable brother-sister team Maia and Alex Shibuntani are definitely my favorite young team in ice dance. This is their first year as senior competitors and they have certainly shown themselves to be the ones to watch. Their programs were fabulous and they created a really special moment in the with their free dance, as well as claiming the silver medal with a fabulous score. And I just loved Maia's dresses. She's adorable. :)

The pairs competition went the way Lydia called it and we were both thrilled with the result. The men's event was a complete shocker, but we were ultimately pleased with the champion. Now, if only everyone can do well at worlds and get our three spots in each discipline back! I'll be watching... ;)

Did you follow the US Championships? Who are your favorite skaters and predictions for worlds?
